According to the chief psychologist at New York City’s Beth Israel Medical Center, going through a significant change in one’s employment can be a causal factor in deciding to move toward divorce. While each couple is unique and will have a blend of stressors, it appears as if moving through major job changes can place a significant amount of pressure on both spouses. For individuals who are going through a difficult time in their marriage, it can be difficult to know when circumstances have passed the point of no return, making divorce the best course of action.

Job changes can affect a marriage in a number of ways. When one spouse loses his or her job, the resulting financial turmoil can lead to increased stress. The partner who is still working can begin to feel resentment over having to shoulder the full financial burden of the family. The spouse who is out of work can become overly defensive, which can damage the bond with the other partner.

A positive job change can also lead to trouble, especially if the new position requires more of that spouse’s time and energy. Even when a promotion comes with an increase in pay, less time spent with one’s spouse and children can increase marital tensions. If a job change requires a move, the relationship can become even more unsettled.

Of course, not every job change will lead New York couples to consider divorce. However, when a relationship is already damaged, a sudden change in one spouse’s employment can be the proverbial straw that breaks the camel’s back. For spouses who find that their marriage is untenable, it is important to research all available options, from marital counseling to the divorce process. No matter which path is chosen, being informed is always the best course of action.
