Divorce rate on the decline among young people

Many couples in New York have heard by now that half of American marriages reportedly do not last. Research, however, shows that the opposite is, in fact, true. According to a new study, the rate of divorce dropped 18 percent over the eight-year period of 2008 to 2016.

One reason the divorce rate is declining is that women in particular are not rushing to get married today as they did in the past. Instead, they are focused on completing their college education and on moving up in their careers. Then, when they get married, their spouses will already know what their career plans and job schedules are, which might help to reduce conflict concerning these matters.

Another reason for the decrease in the divorce rate is the fact that young adults today are choosier about whom they marry compared with years ago. Waiting a few years to get married gives them the chance to get to know their future partners better before they say their “I Dos.” Also, many couples are turning to cohabitation versus marriage — another reason for the drop in the divorce rate.

Even though the rate of divorce is dropping, many couples in New York still have no choice but to break up due to their irreconcilable differences. However, they may be able to avoid going to trial if they can address their divorce matters through informal negotiation or even divorce mediation, for example. In any of these scenarios, an attorney will ensure that a divorcing spouse’s best interests and rights are protected at each stage of the divorce proceeding.
